...actually, it turns 4 years old with the 48th monthly edition today (everyone gets so hung up on measuring years, don't you think?). Kudos to Lenn at LENNDEVOURS and Tim at Winecast for keeping the flame alive for so long - an eternity by web standards!
This month's WBW challenged bloggers to go "back into their wine-drinking history" and retaste their first wine (or the first wine that got their attention.) I chose the latter, and the first wine that really "got my attention" was a Gewurztraminer. I was still in college and somewhat interested in wine, but no big deal (and no budget anyway.) But I got talked into traveling to San Jose for a weekend to visit a friend, and to go with him to a winemaker's dinner. I don't recall for sure the winery anymore, but I do remember the Gewurztraminer that was served with one of the first courses. I was amazed that combination of floral aromas, fruit, and pepper could come from a grape!
The Gewurztraminer I chose to taste was one I received as a wine club selection from Curran, their 2006 Santa Ynez Valley Gewurztraminer. (I joined their wine club to secure a reliable supply of their Grenache Blanc, which is really delicious!) I have been disappointed with Gewurztraminer in recent years - either so floral to the point of soapiness or so austere that the fruit and pepper are lost. I'm happy to report that this Gewurztraminer did not disappoint: aromas of orange blossoms, flavors of lychee and stone fruit, and just the right amount of pepper.
Be sure to trip over to LENNDEVOURS for the whole WBW roundup (and to read his WBW jug "magnum" opus...)

Oh, that's been my problem with Gewurz...You have inspired me to keep on trying it. Cheers!

I am still waiting to try Gewurztraminer. I actually found a great site the other day on like everyday stuff, but they had a wine channel and its actually pretty good. Def worth a look...
